Check out my ratings for the england players in the 0-0 draw vs slovenia. Will anyone reach an 8/10?!
joe hart: the answer is yes, although, it’s never good when your goalkeeper is the best player on the pitch but this is what happened here. hart was outstanding, his diving second-half save is almost certain to grab the headlines.
kyle walker: too often caught in possession. crossing generally poor.
danny rose: more effective than walker but not by much. offered little both on defence and attack.
john stones: still showing signs of worrying indecision. needs to concentrate.
gary cahill: england’s first choice centre-back is lucky to be in the squad at the moment. not what you expect from an experienced player. suspect at international level.
jordan henderson: surprise choice as captain, didn’t live up to expectations. poor performance.
eric dier: started poorly but got better in the second half.
dele alli: showed willingness to drop deep and then surge forward and create in the final third. was the best outfield player until the 62nd minute, which isn’t saying much.
jesse lindgard: uninspiring. are england so desperate for players nowadays that this is our best prospect?
theo walcott: walcott has been excellent for arsenal this season but he failed to deliver in an england shirt once again. not a confident display.
daniel sturridge: football365.com summed it up best: “when sturridge regularly shoots from distance, you know it is because he’s struggling to make an impact in the penalty area. shot from distance a lot.”
andros townsend (for walcott, 62): england’s best outfield player, despite having only 28 minutes. surprise recall to the squad, which probably tells you where england are right now!
wayne rooney (for alli, 73): hit some nice passes. not much else.
marcus rashford (for sturridge 82): once again, used far too late.
